An adventure to find a cure for the coronavirus
A loveable puppy called Molly forms a friendship with two racing pigeons, Destiny and Grace, who live in a wooden hut in the adjacent garden. Grace is kind-hearted and takes a liking to Molly. Destiny is arrogant and is known as the fastest pigeon in the South, proven by his collection of medals.
Destiny huffed loudly and turned his back to Molly as he shouted, “Bats are dirty, as are dogs – you lick your own bottoms!” and with that he flapped his wings and flew a few laps at great speed.
Grace felt the need to calm the situation and was beginning to quite like Molly, “just ignore Destiny, he gets very defensive sometimes. He is used to getting a great deal of respect and does not like to be challenged. Do you know he is the fastest pigeon in the South?”
Their circle of friends expands to include Marv the wise Mandarin Duck, Flash Gordon the Goose, and Merlin the Mosquito.
In a dark damp corner of the market a rather raspy deep-toned voice shouted at them, “should you be here?”
Destiny replied “we have every right to be here. Who are you?”
“Well, you are not from these parts, and no foreigners are welcome here” came the reply.
“We are on urgent and essential business” replied Destiny with little patience for this bothersome interruption. “Why don’t you show yourself, rather than hiding in the dark corner?” she snapped.
With that a lanky long-legged mosquito appeared, staring at them intensely. “Do you like what you see?” he said, with some provocation.
This strange group of friends become united through one cause, to find a cure for the Coronavirus and help the people. Their adventures take them far and wide to China, South Korea, and Oxford in England. Their trip to Oxford coincides with a visit from Prince William who Molly takes a great liking to and manages to get a royal stroke from.
Molly was getting closer and closer to Prince William. She had managed to weave her way between all his entourage and found herself next to him. She rubbed her wet nose against his trouser leg to get his attention. She looked up at him with her big brown eyes and took a deep sniff.
He looked down and said, “aww what a cute puppy”, and patted her on the head. Molly licked her lips in delight and decided, in that moment, she would never let her owners wash her ever again!
Molly and the two pigeons is a short story for upper primary and lower secondary school children to teach them about Coronavirus in a fun and light-hearted way, and records a significant period of time in history. It could also be used as a teaching tool for parents and teachers.
They arrived home just before the sun rose. Molly crept into her dog flap and returned to her favourite sleeping spot on her brown blanket on the sofa. Grace and Destiny crawled into the tunnel created by Molly back to their cramped pigeon coop. Marv returned to his bed under a wooden gantry with boats moored up on either side. Merlin the Mosquito stayed put on Flash Gordon’s boat. As it speeded off it seemed to vanish into thin air.
Fiona Dunkley, the author, is the founder of FD Consultants a global psychological health consultancy. She has been supporting the mental health of individuals surviving pandemics, from Ebola to Coronavirus. She hopes her story goes some way to educating and supporting the mental health of children and to capture a moment in history for future learning.
